A Grace-Filled Life
Sr. Mary Luke Jones
Once I read that the sweetest word one friend can say to another is “Stay.” Our promise of stability, to remain in the community for life, is our way of honoring the commitment proclaimed when we made our profession.
Are there days when it would have been easier to leave? Were there times when staying demanded more than we thought we could give? Were there moments when “leave” sounded more inviting than “stay”? Sure. Afterall, we are only human.
What keeps us here? In his Rule, St. Benedict encourages us to always think of what is best for the community. To flee when things get tough only thinks about my comfort, what is best for me. Admittedly, there are times when that is not only the best course of action but absolutely mandatory. In instances of abuse or violence, one must leave.
Barring that, our willingness to remain, to stay, to work things out, to listen, to learn, to compromise, to discern, to serve, to respect the thoughts and feelings of others is what our promise of stability is all about.
And on top of all that, our friend Jesus invites us to stay.
