Sr. Juliann Babcock, OSB, 69, died peacefully on June 15, 2018 at St. Paul Hermitage where she was a resident. Sr. Juliann was born on October 5, 1948 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late James and Evelyn Babcock. On September 7, 1966, she entered Our Lady of Grace Monastery.
In 1968 she made her First Monastic Profession and in 1973 she made her Perpetual. Monastic Profession. Sr. Juliann and her classmates celebrated their 25thJubilee in 1993 and their 50th Jubilee just last week.
Sr. Juliann grew up in Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Indianapolis. She graduated from Our Lady of Grace Academy in Beech Grove, Indiana. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Indianapolis and a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Ball State University. In 1985 she received a Master’s Degree in Spirituality from Holy Name College, Oakland, California.
Sr. Juliann began her career in education in 1971 and taught at various schools in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis:
St. Anthony, Clarksville, Indiana – Second Grade – 1971-1972
Christ the King, Indianapolis, Indiana – First Grade – 1972-1973
Cannelton, Indiana – Third & Fourth Grades – 1973-1975
St. Pius X – Indianapolis, Indiana – Fifth & Sixth Grades – 1975-1979
St. Anthony, Clarksville, Indiana – Art Teacher – 1979-1981
In 1981, Sr. Juliann was instrumental in the opening of the Benedict Inn Retreat & Conference Center, where she was the Director of Programming.
She served her community as the Oblate Director, Vocation Director, Formation Director and Subprioress. In 2009 she was elected as the seventh Prioress of her religious community
Sr. Juliann is survived by her Religious Community, her brother Dave (Ann) Babcock; sister, Mary Martha (Tom) Costello of Indianapolis, Indiana, five nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at St. Paul Hermitage on Monday, June 18th from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM and then at Our Lady of Grace Monastery from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM. A wake service will be at 7:00 PM in the Monastery Chapel. Her funeral Mass will be at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, June 19th with viewing from 2:00 PM until the funeral also in the monastery chapel.
