ARE THEY NOW ?
Sr. Mary Patrick Lenges
Sister Mary Patrick Lenges was the second of 12
children born to William and Mary. She was born
in Terre Haute, Indiana where she attended Sacred
Heart School, St. Joseph Academy and then St. Agnes
Academy in Indianapolis.
She was a tremendous seamstress and took a job
in a factory in Indianapolis. She was an ardent
member of the United Garment Workers of America.
In fact, when shopping, she would only purchase
clothes that bore the "Union Label."
Although she loved her work in the factory, she
had a greater desire to serve God and entered
the convent in 1935.
Teaching became her life. She began at St. Joseph
School in Evansville, Indiana. In 1943 she went
to Belcourt, North Dakota to teach American Indian
children on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation.
Returning to Indianapolis she taught at various
schools in Indiana, including Our Lady of Grace
Academy and St. John, Baldwin Park, California.
