WHERE ARE THEY NOW ?

Sr. Mary Patrick Lengesnone

Sister Mary Patrick Lenges was the second of 12 children born to William and Mary. She was born in Terre Haute, Indiana where she attended Sacred Heart School, St. Joseph Academy and then St. Agnes Academy in Indianapolis.

She was a tremendous seamstress and took a job in a factory in Indianapolis. She was an ardent member of the United Garment Workers of America. In fact, when shopping, she would only purchase clothes that bore the "Union Label." Although she loved her work in the factory, she had a greater desire to serve God and entered the convent in 1935.
Teaching became her life. She began at St. Joseph School in Evansville, Indiana. In 1943 she went to Belcourt, North Dakota to teach American Indian children on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation. Returning to Indianapolis she taught at various schools in Indiana, including Our Lady of Grace Academy and St. John, Baldwin Park, California.

It would seem that a long list of assignments would be sufficient reason to retire, but in 1965 she came upon her greatest love in teaching when she began working with mentally retarded children.

She continued her education so as to keep up with the special needs of her students. She went to Michigan State University for the blind, Indiana State for speech correction and emotional disturbances, and Indiana University for curriculum and audiovisual enrichment. In addition to her daily tasks in the classroom with her special students, Sister Mary Pat also taught a methods class for Special Education teachers at I.U. Southeast.

Retirement must have been a welcome sight for Sister Mary Patrick, but it is hard to keep a good woman down. When she returned to the monastery she continued her sewing-making her famous "nun dolls", quilting, crocheting afghans and oil painting. She continues to bring joy to others through her many beautiful creations.

Sister Mary Patrick can no longer do the things she once did that brought her joy. She resides in the healthcare wing at St. Paul Hermitage.
